Build a Gift Box

Come for some tablesaw practice, leave with an elegant little box!  In this  workshop we will use the tablesaw to cut dados, rabbets, and some raised panels, and the router table for a little bit of detailing.  You'll learn how to accurately fit small pieces together, and work with some lovely local hardwoods to make a simple box for keepsakes, tea, tiny spice jars, or even recipe cards!  Whether you're brand new to the woodshop, or have experience and want some practice on the tablesaw, this workshop will guide you safely through some simple techniques for working with small parts accurately.

Beginning Lathe Techniques: Bowls, Boxes, Platters

This class is an introduction to face-turning techniques on the lathe. Together we look at the fundamental tools and techniques used to create a wide-variety of simple forms which can be used as the basis of more complex creations. The hands-on, direct learning approach includes safety, setup, design considerations, and tool selection. This is an excellent opportunity to take the mystery out of turning and serves as a springboard to make your creations come to life.

Make a Shaker Bench

This class serves as the perfect introduction to woodworking’s most versatile joints: dovetails and mortise-and-tenon.  It also serves as a great way to practice handtool technique.  Over the course of four sessions, students will turn a single five-foot board into a handsome, functional bench.  We’ll start with a brief discussion of design principles and layout practices and then get to the heart of the matter: cutting dovetails.  Students will cut a few sets of dovetails in scrap wood before taking the saw to their final project. The bench’s stretcher, joined to the legs with wedged through tenons, provides another opportunity for the careful paring of saw and chisel.  If time allows, we’ll finish-plane and sand the benches, but we won’t apply finish to them in class.
