Inner Elf Cutting Board Gift Making WorkShop with Tom Bodett

Work alongside HatchSpace co-founder, Tom Bodett, to make beautiful curly maple cutting boards you’ll be proud to give your family and friends

Working as a team, Tom, along with his assistant, will coordinate the group to produce 20 to 24 cutting boards during 4 fun three-hour sessions. Participants will mill, rip, glue, crosscut, shape, sand, finish to perfection.   Rotating through several repetitive tasks allows the beginner to build confidence and proficiency.  Everyone will take home four finished curly maple cutting boards worth over $30 each.

It’s not rocket science, and we’ll all find the jobs we do well.   Router table, orbital sander, hand sanding, and card scraper may also be put to use.

Some basic experience will be helpful, but not required.

Make a Frame

In this workshop you will learn safe use of the table saw and miter saw.  Participants will learn to use a specialty jig to create a beautiful mahogany frame.   The first session will cover safe use of the table saw, cutting precision angles and glue up of your frame.  The second session will follow up with sanding and finishing of your new creation. 

No woodworking experience required.

Build a Flower Press

Work alongside HatchSpace co-founder, Tom Bodett, to make a flower press you’ll be proud to give to family and friends.

Working as a team, Tom, along with an assistant, will coordinate the group to produce handsome flower presses that will last a lifetime during this 3 hour workshop.  Participants will cut, shape, drill, sand, and assemble.   Choosing from a selection of woods and styles, everyone will take home 2  flower presses. 

No woodworking experience required.

Build a Gift Box

Come for some tablesaw practice, leave with an elegant little box!  In this  workshop we will use the tablesaw to cut dados, rabbets, and some raised panels, and the router table for a little bit of detailing.  You'll learn how to accurately fit small pieces together, and work with some lovely local hardwoods to make a simple box for keepsakes, tea, tiny spice jars, or even recipe cards!  Whether you're brand new to the woodshop, or have experience and want some practice on the tablesaw, this workshop will guide you safely through some simple techniques for working with small parts accurately.

Create a Design and Carve on the X-Carve (CNC)

Design in Easel, an easy to use design program and ready your creation for the X-Carve. 

In this workshop, participants will learn to layout their design using text, graphics or shape elements available in Easel.  Following design, the X-Carve is used carve your project into wood.  You will learn to set up the router,  and go through the process taking your project from design to ready to finish.  This workshop is perfect for someone wanting to learn to use a CNC machine without the "heavy lifting" involved in industrial level CNC machines.  Three magnets and a 6 X 8 inch block of wood are included in the cost.  

No woodworking experience required.

Sunday, December 5 10 AM - 1 PM

Create a Tile Top Charcuterie Board

Make a three-tile serving board with either maple or cherry frame and handle. Participants will be guided through the process of building this charcuterie tray while learning to make grooves safely on a table saw and cutting miters on a miter saw. A variety of easy finishes will be available, and each participant will be taken through the finishing process on sample wood during the class time, and be given a jar of the finish to take home.

No woodworking experience required.

Turned Gifts, An Introduction to Woodturning

The wood lathe is a wonderful tool for creating quick, quality projects… basic forms are easy to learn, and the creative possibilities are endless. This class will introduce beginners to the safe and thoughtful use of the wood lathe. The projects, including key rings, bottle stoppers, spinning tops, and tree ornaments, are perfect for learning basic techniques while exploring form, color, and texture. They also make great gifts. 

Previous experience on the lathe not required.

Cost of materials included. All participants will have the opportunity to leave with two turned items.
